Although there are hundreds of Star Wars-themed Seiko Ananta Star Wars Stormtrooper replica watches there on eBay, most of them do not differ too much from the dirt-cheap jobs that your kids can get with their Happy Meal. Judging by the pictures that I was able to find, the differences between the base model and the new Seiko Stormtrooper Edition are reserved to the finish of the piece.
The hour markers, the luminous hours and minute hands, even the sub-dials were elaborately re-styled featuring an Imperial Sith Star logo at 6 o’clock and the familiar STAR WARS insignia right above the center of the dial.
This new Seiko Star Wars Stormtrooper (Ref. SDGC011) (and a whole plethora of other timekeepers dedicated to different characters of the SW universe), however, plays in a much higher league. Based on the well-known Seiko Ananta SPB021, the gadget comes powered by a high-quality self-winding movement and features a hard-to-scratch body crafted from hardened steel.
Thanks to the chosen black and white color scheme, the watch not only looks very graphic, but is also a lot more legible than the original. Both calendar sub-dials at 3 hours (day of week) and 6 hours (date) are now easier to read and the power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock is less obtrusive.
To my deepest regret, the high-contrast rectangular hour markers are not painted with that sexy black lume you can find on some “black-on-black” Swiss watches. However, you can still read the Japan made fake Seiko watch in a total darkness, since the indices are accompanied with 12 luminous dots on the bezel flange. The dots are covered with the high-quality LumiBrite luminous substance, as are the hour and minute hands that, by the way, also look more elegant than the same parts of the Ananta model.
The only thing that bothers me is the price. The Japanese brand plans to charge no less than 136,500 yen (approx. $1740 USD at today’s exchange rate) for this JDM beast and this may be just too much for a normal Star Wars geek.
As for the movement, the new Seiko Star Wars Stormtrooper limited edition is powered by the relatively fresh (if my memory serves me well, it was introduced around four years ago) Seiko caliber 6R21 automatic movement. Built on 26 synthetic rubies, it beats at a standard frequency of 28,800 vph and is good for as long as 45 hours after being fully wound.
